CLASS DESCRIPTION

Chemistry is often called the central science because of its role in connecting the physical sciences with the life sciences and applied sciences such as medicine and engineering. But chemistry is more than just an academic science. An understanding of chemistry helps us to appreciate God’s design and creation as we witness it all around us every day.

This is a hands-on introductory high school chemistry class using Discovering Design with Chemistry by Dr. Jay Wile. Students will study the conservation of matter and energy, the behavior and properties of matter, the particulate nature of matter, and equilibrium and driving forces. Specific topics covered include the states of matter, atomic structure, the nature of light, elements, compounds, and mixtures, chemical reactions and stoichiometry, bases and acids, oxidation and reduction, thermodynamics, kinetics, and chemical equilibrium.

Class time will include lecture, demonstrations, lab, and other activities.  Grading will be based on the students’ performance on quizzes, homework questions, and lab reports. Labs will use scientific method to observe, measure, and analyze results. Students will receive safety training and must pass a safety quiz before participating in lab. Lab equipment and supplies will be provided. Students will develop collaborative skills in a supportive Christian atmosphere.

Completion of this class will earn your student one credit in high school chemistry.
