CLASS DESCRIPTION
This course is worth 2.0 High School credits, and will cover both Economics and Statistics. Students will work on curriculum and projects that will both inter-weave, and exist independently, depending on the material covered.
Some weeks will be fully devoted to Statistics, and other weeks will be fully devoted to Economics, and still other weeks will involve both simultaneously as we look to apply each subject area.
Economics content will include trade, supply and demand, macro and micro, current events, and application to daily life. The instructor has been trained in teaching this content to high school through the Foundation of Teaching Economics (FTE.org).
Regarding Statistics - Can you add, subtract, multiply, and divide? If you can, you can take a this class! Truly all Statistics involves is knowing in what order to add, subtract, multiply, or divide. It is insanely interesting to the instructor, and with a little help your student will work independently and cooperatively to collect, analyze, interpret, and report data. In addition, students will learn how to make recommendations via applied projects.
Past PATH students did the following:
1) Studied a high school youth group to learn about discipleship, faith, and habits. Made recommendations on how to bridge gaps.
2) Studied a local choir group to learn which modes of practicing were the most effective, and what captures interest and builds retention.
3) Studied a local business to learn if weather has an affect on it's sales
4) Studies a local basketball team to learn which stats made the biggest impact on a teams Win or Loss
Students will learn how to collect, organize, describe, and analyze real data using a wide variety of statistical techniques. The instructor will rely heavily on the powerful statistics engine in Excel, and will also develop much needed skills in MS Word, and Keyboarding. Students will hopefully leave this class with a wide variety of useful analytical techniques to understand and describe data. They will also have a much stronger skillset in how to utilize powerful Office tools to aid in report or presentation creation
The instructor will guide students through each step in class, and provide videos for students to practice at home. Classes will be mostly hands on working on the computer to learn the techniques of statistical analysis. Some classes will be reserved for presenting statistical findings. Assignments will include completion of Excel workbooks, short papers describing statistical findings, and in class discussion.
If students so desire, they can earn PSEO credit in Business Statistics. Email the tutor for more information.
