CLASS DESCRIPTION
As students discuss the life of J.R.R. Tolkien and his excellent literary works, they will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the relevant social, cultural, and Biblical issues reflected throughout his writings. Through literary analysis and interpretation, students will learn to evaluate information and persuasively express their perspectives. We will use a collaborative approach to learning, as students investigate the vocabulary, characters, themes, and developments of Tolkien's writings. This class qualifies as a foreign literature.

Mrs. Melanie Biermeier graduated from UW-Platteville with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1995. In 2000, she graduated from Winona State University with a Master of Science degree in Education. From 1995 until 2002, Melanie taught a diversity of classes including high school composition, art, computer, and music, as well as several elementary grades at Coulee Christian School in West Salem, WI. While at Coulee Christian School, Melanie taught high school art classes for several years and wrote the school's K - 12 art curriculum for the ACSI accreditation process. Since 2002, she has been a teaching consultant for a variety of homeschool learning communities in the Rochester area. Melanie has a passion for teaching science from a Christian perspective. In recent years, she has had the privilege of teaching a diversity of science topics and classes for Classical Conversations and Christ Community Homeschool Cooperative. Melanie has been married to Joel for 18 years, and they have five children. They have been homeschooling for thirteen years. In her free time, she enjoys drawing, painting, camping, biking, gardening, journaling, scrapbooking, and playing guitar.
