Course Information

U.S. Government
FEE:  $180

This course is geared for High School Sophomore-Seniors.

We will be using Sonlight’s U.S. Government curriculum as a guide for this course. This will include a deep dive into the Constitution, a thorough examination of our three branches of government, and weekly current events articles/discussions. We will be covering all of this material in light of the Gospel.

We will go “heavy” on presentations and class discussions/debates/discussion circles and “light” on papers and exams.

I also plan to incorporate a variety of “voices” from independent journalists and youtubers (including PragerU, Charlie Kirk, Daily Wire, Timcast, Dinesh D’Souza, among others).

As you can see from the book list there needs to be a solid commitment to reading throughout the week to prepare for Monday’s class. As the teacher, I am joining the students in this study of government and will be learning alongside them.

Here is the book list:
Basic American Government, by Clarence Carson
The Complete Idiot’s Guide to U.S. Government and Politics, by Franco Scardino
The U.S. Supreme Court: A Very Short Introduction, by Linda Greenhouse
Black Like Me, by John Howard Griffin
Selecting a President, by Eleanor Clift and Matthew Spieler
Are you Liberal? Conservative? Or Confused?, by Richard J. Maybury
Congress for Dummies, by David Silverberg
Truth and Transformation, by Vishal Mangalwadi

Each student needs his/her own copy of Sonlight's American Government/Civics Student Guide. These are $33/without 3" binder and weekly tabs and $57/with 3" binder and weekly tabs.  You may order one for your student or let me know and I can order them. If you would prefer to have me order one for you, then please email me at teresajcole66@gmail.com by August 2 and let me know if you want just the paper guide or the guide with the binder/tabs. Then you can include payment for this along with your first tuition check to me.

TUTOR
Mrs. Cole has a bachelor's degree in Communicative Arts: English and Public Speaking, along with secondary school teaching certification. She has taught public high school and middle school English and speech, has coached competitive speech, and is a regular speaker at MOPS and other women's church events. Mrs. Cole has taught both elementary and middle school students through Classical Conversations and has tutored at a local homeschool co-op. She is a lifelong learner, an avid reader, and now in her 50s has taken up pickleball, rock climbing, and trout fishing. She enjoys working with teens and challenging them in their faith, their thinking, and their writing and speaking skills.

In Her Own Words:

"As I grow older, I become more and more enamored with God’s Word. I can’t choose a favorite verse, there are far too many. However, one verse that has made an impression on me in the last year is John 3:30, “He must become greater, I must become less.” John is clarifying to his followers that he (John) is not the Messiah. His job has been to prepare people for Jesus’ coming and now that Jesus has arrived, He is the Messiah, and they should follow Him."
